Harriet Miers Appointed to US Supreme Court as Summer Student
Washington: The US Senate confirmed today the appointment of Harriet Miers to the US Supreme Court as summer student judge-in-training.
Miers, nominated by President Bush to replace retiring Judge O'Connor, caused an intense half-day debate in her confirmation hearings and subsequent hour long maneuvering by members of the Senate Judicial Committee.
The most contentious issue was the fact that Ms. Miers has never been a judge before.
"We wanted to appoint a qualified person to the Court," said Senator Biden, "but we understood the predicament of the President. With this nomination he had to please his staunch conservative base and woo moderate conservatives at the same time. The only way to accomplish that was to nominate someone who honestly does not have a legal position on anything."
In a spirit of bipartisanship, members from both parties reached across the aisle and appointed Miers on a six month probation as summer student. Her appointment also breaks a record in it being the first appointment to occur on the same day as her nomination.
Chief Justice John Roberts noted: "I am pleased with the appointment. Judge-in-Training Miers will start as filing clerk and will also operate the tea trolley. Starting at the bottom provides a solid foundation for Ms. Miers to one day become a real judge."
President Bush expressed his satisfaction with the decision and noted that he could not have expected anything more.
